About earthflux
earthflux is an open hub for the software, pipelines and datasets behind multi-hazard climate indices, built for people who manage water, land, forests and energy systems. It builds on climate_indices as an independent project.
Where it comes from
Drought indices at NOAA NCEI
climate_indices was first developed at NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information (J. Adams) to compute SPI, SPEI, PET and the Palmer indices from gridded and climate-division data.
Open source on GitHub
The package was released as open source for reproducible drought index calculations in Python.
Version 3.0: fire, flood and scPDSI
Version 3.0 expands the library with fire and flood methods, self-calibrated PDSI and a gridded fast path. VALIDATION.md distinguishes independently checked methods from those covered only by regression tests.
earthflux
The earthflux name reflects a broader, multi-hazard scope. Energy indices are catalogued, their published data products are planned, and preview datasets and script generation are available on this site.
Until the move is complete, the code lives at climate_indices repository on GitHub.
What it provides
- Software
- The worker, the data-prep scripts and this site, which call the separate climate_indices library for every index calculation.
- Pipelines
- Reproducible workflows and generated scripts that read public inputs or your own data and run on your own infrastructure.
- Datasets
- Index datasets generated from public sources with provenance recorded. SPI and SPEI from NOAA nClimGrid are the first previews; the catalogue lists what is planned.
How it’s built
- Cite the method and show the evidence
- Each index implements a published definition, and VALIDATION.md records how it was checked: against operational products, independent implementations or published worked examples, or by regression tests alone.
- Keep conventions shared
- Calibration periods, units, missing-data rules and output metadata work the same way in every hazard module.
- Develop in the open
- Development is public. Contributions and index proposals are welcome through the project repository.
